Today we were in Phuket, Thailand. This are like the other
places we have been lately was a center of the tin trade and colonized by the
Portuguese, French and British dating back to the 16th century. Many
tourists come here for its outstanding white sand beaches.
We took a tour of Phang Nga Bay, about two hours from where
we are docked, which has caves and grottos to be explored by boat. Phuket is an
island and we drove to the mainland of Thailand to get to this bay.
We took one of these long boats, with seats that are not
anchored down, very interesting. We drove all around the bay and the scenery
was great. We went by Khao Ping Gun (James Bond Island), where the Man with the
Golden Gun was filmed in 1974. They said that he landed a helicopter in the
middle of the island. In one of the pictures you can see the sand in the middle
of the island where he was supposed to have landed. We stopped at Koh Panyi water village where 400 houses are built on stilts
and are connected by wooden walkways. We then had a buffet lunch at the Phang
Nga Bay Resort, which overlooked the nearby mangrove forest. I think they use
the word resort loosely around here. Then back to the ship for some quick
shopping at the pier and then a day at sea.

Two long boats- One with inboard is ours (without wake);
other one has a car engine sitting in the back of the boat with a driveshaft
coming out of the back with a propeller on it. It is lifted in and out of the
water when they start and stop. Not sure that would work in the states.
