Well this is a sea day, but I had to share some pictures
with you from the King Neptune ceremony commemorating the crossing of the
equator. They had crew from different areas of the ship that have never crossed
the equator, called Pollywogs, who were tried by the ships officers to see if
they would sink (thrown in the pool) or stink, sit out of the pool. The cruise
director is dressed as a magistrate and King Neptune (assistant cruise
director) and his wife (staff) are there. The four officers, one being the captain,
judge each of the defendants. While waiting trial they are held in a makeshift
cell where the crew pours water on them. When they are ready to be tried they
kneel before the officers and the cruise director reads off their trespasses.
They then have to kiss the fish and then lie down on a table where the doctors
and nurses (more crew dressed up) smear their bodies with colored meringue. The
officers then decide whether they will sink or stink. If they have thumbs down
the defendants are pushed in the pool by the doctors and nurses, otherwise they
sit out in the sun and stink. At the end, they pushed the captain, all
officers, the King and his wife and the cruise director in the pool. Quite a
sight to see. Oh, this was at 10 AM and at 9:15 they started serving Singapore
Slings (Equator Slings).
